Hey there! I’m writing to tell you a little bit about my life:
My name’s Kwame, I’m 10 years old and I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my family! That’s my mom, my dad, my grandma, and my brothers. I have an older brother named Michael, who’s about four years older than me. And I have a younger brother, Kofi, who’s about five. We all get along pretty well, though Kofi gets on my nerves sometimes, always bothering and interrupting me when I’m trying to do stuff. Michael says that I was like that and that I used to annoy him when I was Kofi’s age, but I don’t remember any such thing.
My parents are awesome. My mom’s a teacher--but at another school, not the one I go to. Sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if I was in her class… she could be even better at helping me with my homework. It’s probably for the best that I’m not though, the other kids would be pointing it out all of the time. My dad works at one of the warehouses in the city. I don’t know all of the details, but he says that he works a lot with packagings and sends out shipments of goods. It sounds like a lot of hard work. Dad’s always telling us to take pride in our work and put 100% in everything we do. There’s no time for slacking or pushing things off--we’ve got people to impress!
My grandma’s pretty great too, but she doesn’t do much these days. She pretty much just lays around in bed in her room, watching TV all day, and gets to call us and my parents whenever she’s hungry and wants food and stuff. That sounds pretty ideal to be honest but if I tried to do the same thing my parents would never let me hear the end of it. Whenever me and my brothers come home from school she always says our names from her room to get us to come inside and give her kisses. When I was younger, she always used to be the one to do that to us, catching us by surprise and wrapping us in big ol’ hugs. I ask her why she doesn’t walk anymore, and she says that she has problems with her legs but it’s nothing that I need to worry about since I’m a kid and that’s all a bunch of grownup stuff. I say she should go to the doctor and my parents remind me that she did--but that was like five years ago! Even though I was little then I still remember how my parents made a big deal of it. They talked about grandma getting surgery, and how much money it would cost. My mom stayed at home with me and my brother a lot, and my dad went to work and the hospital a bunch and we didn’t get to see him that much because he’d always come home late. That was also around the same time that grandma moved in with us -- she used to live by herself -- and all of us had to start helping take care of her.
Since then we haven’t really been to the doctors that much, and even I don’t go other than for the physicals we absolutely have to get for school. Whenever I get sick with a cold I always ask if I can go to the doctor and my mom says I’m just being dramatic, and then she gives me some Tylenol and rubs Vicks on my back. That’s usually enough to do the trick, but I’d love to get to go to the doctor’s more. Not to get treatment or anything, but just because I think doctors and nurses are really cool. Whenever we talk about what we want to be when we grow up at school, I say that I’d like to be someone that helps people and makes them feel better. And there are a lot of people that do that but doctors are definitely the coolest. Just from the stuff I’ve been reading about them. I mentioned it to my parents a couple of times and they always laugh, saying I have an “active imagination.” But even if it's hard, I think becoming a doctor is still something I really want to do. If it's possible, I want to give it a try!
